Warriors lose heartbreaker to Vernon

Oct. 2, 2009

Vipers score late to beat Warriors 4-3

West Kelowna, B.C. ? You have to feel for Westside Warriors goaltender Kevin Jebson.

Mike Collins scored with 2.3 seconds remaining to give the Vernon Vipers a 4-3 victory over the Warriors Friday night, spoiling a spectacular 48-save performance by Jebson.

Collins broke to the net, took a great pass from Jonathan Millhouse and deked Jebson to send more than 1,100 people to the exits at Royal LePage Place shaking their heads.

The Warriors actually had a 3-2 lead with less than four minutes remaining in the game, but Vernon, the defending national Junior A champions and now 7-0 this season, tied the contest through a nifty three-way passing play finished by Kellen Jones.

?Both of those last two goals were cases of blown coverages,? Warriors assistant coach Greg Lynott said after the game. ?We were guilty of a little puck watching.?

Braden Pimm and Steven Weinstein also scored for Vernon. Trevor Bailey, Scott MacDonald and Cam Reid scored for the Warriors.

Graeme Gordon made 16 saves in the Vernon net and picked up the victory.

The Warriors (5-3) continue this home stand with a game against another Interior Conference rival, the Merritt Centennials, on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Royal Le Page Place.
