SPRUCE KINGS FIGHT BACK TO SPLIT WITH WESTSIDE

A 2-0 lead wasn’t enough, as Prince George came from behind to beat Westside 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.

It was a reversal of the scoreline from the previous evening, when the Warriors had claimed the first half of a two-game set in Northern B.C.

Leading 1-0 after the first period on Izaak Berglund’s third of the season, Marcus Basara struck his first as a Warrior 37 seconds into the second.

But the Spruce Kings would tie the game up with goals from Myles Fitzgerald and Michael Betz (his first as a King) to send the teams into the second intermission tied 2-2.

An even third period was decided when a Gerry Fitzgerald shot was tipped in by his brother Myles (his second of the game) with 3:37 remaining.  The Warriors appealed that the tally came off a high stick, but the goal would stand, and the home side would hang on for a narrow victory.

It was the second decision of the game to go against Westside.  Early in the second period, a Brennan Clark backhander clanged off the post before bouncing off Devon Hascarl and in.  Hascarl maintains the puck went off his chest, but the goal was disallowed as the refs said he had gloved it over the line.

Ty Swabb earned the victory in his first start in the Prince George net.  Dwayne Rodrigue suffered the loss for Westside, with final shots counting 38-36 in favour of P.G.

After the game, new Warrior Marcus Basara said he felt the outcome was determined by “a couple of breaks.”  The former Viper also admitted it felt good to notch his first goal with his new club.  “I wish we could have gotten another one, and got the W” he lamented, “but that’s ok – we’re rolling in the right direction here.”

Westside now returns home for a contest against Penticton on Tuesday night.
