MAYORS LAY DOWN FRIENDLY WAGER

For the second year in a row, the mayors of all 16 BC Hockey League communities are answering a challenge.

The top local politicians from each of the 16 cities with BCHL franchises are answering the 2013-14 jersey challenge, initiated by Port Alberni Mayor John Douglas.

Douglas has challenged his fellow mayors to wear the jersey of the team that wins the 2014 Fred Page Cup at a subsequent council meeting.

“The jersey challenge is a really good opportunity to have some light-hearted fun and get the community involved in a friendly rivalry,” saiys Douglas. “It gets people interested in not only their local team but also in engaging rival teams and fans at their arenas.”

BCHL commissioner John Grisdale knows well the passion fans express when rival teams face off.

“Our teams receive great support from their respective communities some genuine rivalries exist between towns because of that,” says Grisdale. “With each of the mayors taking on the challenge, put out there by Mayor Douglas, it only raises the level of interest and intrigue."
