WEST KELOWNA CRACKS KRAFT HOCKEYVILLE TOP FIVE

West Kelowna has advanced to the Top 5 in the Canada-wide Kraft Hockeyville competition.

Two weeks ago during the initial round of voting, West Kelowna received just over 1 million votes. Campbell River finished second while Osoyoos was third.

West Kelowna is now up against Duck Lake Sk., Stirling Ont., Amos Que., and Yarmouth NS.

Stirling Ont. has the most votes in the first round with more than 1.3M.

Voting for the top five communities is now underway and will run until 9 p.m. Pacific Time Tuesday, March 20.

Votes can be cast at http://krafthockeyville.cbc.ca/. You are encouraged to vote as many times as you want.

A voting centre has been set up at the Comfort Inn on Highway 97 across from Bylands.

There are about 70 computers and 30 phones at the voting centre for people to utilize.

The voting centre will be open 24 hours a day until voting ends at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The Kraft Hockeyville title hasn't resided in BC since Terrace was crowned champion in 2009.

"Its been three years since BC was named Kraft Hockeyville," says West Kelowna committee co-chair Andrew Deans.

"It's time we brought the trophy and all that goes with it back to this province."

Even though West Kelowna earned over a million votes during the first round, committee co-chair Adam Less reminds everybody that all the votes are now re-set to zero.

"It's important we vote even more vigorously then we did during the first round of voting," says Less.

"We know the 'Beasts From The East' will be mobilizing their voters and we have to do the same."

To that end, West Kelowna's bid has received some high profile support and endorsements.

Premier Christy Clark and Central Okanagan MLAs Ben Stewart, Steve Thomson and Norm Letnick are all on board as are federal MPs Dan Albas and Ron Cannan.

The Vancouver Canucks organization is also solidly behind West Kelowna's bid while players Andrew Ebbett and Alex Burrows have produced videos of support. Professional golfers Bob Tway and Tim Simpson have also put together support videos.

EZ Rock radio in Kelowna and the 'Shower Stall Singers' also backed the bid with a very special rendition of the classic Rock Around the Clock (Vote Around The Clock).

The winner of Kraft Hockeyville will receive $100,000 in arena upgrades and host an NHL pre season game and hockey festival in September.

The 2012 winner will be announced Saturday, March 31 during CBC's Hockey Night In Canada.
