Vernon, B.C.-  Offence runs dry as West Kelowna drops a 2-0 decision to the Vernon Vipers.

The West Kelowna Warriors were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill for the greater portion of the first period.. The Warriors took four separate trips to the sin bin but thanks to the steller goaltending provided by starter Johnny Derrick, the crisis was diverted. Derrick turned away every Vipers’ shot that was sent his way to keep the teams locked at zero despite being outshot 11-4 in the opening frame.

The second period followed a tune similar to the first. However, The Warriors managed to stay clear of the penalty box. West Kelowna quadrupled their shots on net, for a two period total of 16. Derrick continued his stellar play from the first, turning away the additional 14 shots he faced during the second.

Vernon managed to finally crack Derrick on their 30th shot. Back on the power play, Tyler Carpendale banged home a rebound to break the scoreless deadlock with 12:12 remaining. Vernon would add an empty netter in the closing seconds to defeat West Kelowna 2-0. Despite the Loss, Derrick was named the game’s 1st start.

West Kelowna returns to action Sunday, April 25th, with a 6:00pm match up with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. Fans can catch the action on BCHLTV (formally HockeyTV) or on the free internet radio stream on Mixlr.
