FUTURE LOOK – AMBROSE FIRKUS

I caught up with future Warrior Ambrose Firkus at his home in Irma, Alberta on Monday. The 17 year-old is coming off a 47 point season (in 27 games) with the Lloydminster Midget ‘AAA’ Bobcats and has committed to Westside for the coming season.

Check out his numbers from elite hockey prospects.

Below is a brief Q&A we had over the phone.

Zacks: Why did you decide to play your Junior hockey in the BCHL?

Ambrose Firkus: “I’ve heard great things about the league, and have had some friends who’ve played out there and have nothing but good things to say about it.”

JZ: Why Westside?

AF: “I’ve been talking to the Warriors since the start of the year, and it’s just been going great. Rylan and I seemed to have a bit of a bond right away. It’s also a great location to go and play, right next to Kelowna. Cant’ get better than that. Nice town, good team, good coaching – I’m looking forward to it.”

JZ: What kind of player are you? Describe your game?

AF: “I like to set people up more than score, but I score too I guess. I go to the corner and win battles, and get the puck to people who can put it in the net.”

JZ: You played 11 games as an AP in the AJHL, what have you learned playing junior A?

AF: “You’ve got to keep your feet moving, and the guys are a lot bigger than in midget too, so you’ve got to keep your head up and just make smarter plays.”

JZ: What’s your plan for the summer?

AF: “I actually play baseball in the summer. We’ll be going to nationals at the start of August in Fredericton. I’ll also be working out over the summer and getting ready for hockey.”

JZ: Excited?

AF: “Very, I can’t wait.
