Cowichan makes first and only trip to Westside

West Kelowna, B.C. ? Familiar foe or not, the Westside Warriors are determined to gather points on this extended home stand.

The Warriors, with four wins in their last five games (all at Royal LePage Place) get their only chance of the season to play the Cowichan Valley Capitals at home on Sunday (2:30 p.m. start, tickets at 250-762-5050 or westsidewariors.ca).

If that wasn?t enough motivation, it?s parent weekend for the Warriors, with moms nd dads here from many parts of Western Canada and the U.S. And the Penticton Vees and Vernon Vipers, ahead of the Warriors in the Interior Conference standings, aren?t exactly slowing down either.

?You want to get up for every game,? said Friday night?s overtime hero Grayson Downing. ?It?s two points we need.  It?s weird playing outside of your division some times but it?s good to see what they?ve got.?

The Warriors will play in Cowichan on a road trip that comes in less than two weeks.

?You want to show them what you got,? said Downing. ?You want to have good game even if you don?t play them that much.?

Cowichan has nine points from 11 games (four wins). They are led on offence by Curtis Gedig and Taylor Paziuk (both with eight points). Gedig, 18,  is a big (6? 3?) defenceman from West Kelowna and Paziuk is a 19-year-old from Prince George. Nineteen-year-old Alexandre Peck (a six-foot-four-inch 19-year-old from Kirkland, Que.) is their top goalie, statistics-wise, with a 3.27 goals against average and an .825 save percentage. Taylor Pears from Cobble Hill, B.C. (18 years old) and Larent Brossoit (16 year-old from Surrey) are the other goalies listed for the Capitals.

Trevor Bailey, a 20-year-old from Winfield, and Cam Reid, an 18-year-old Nashville Predators draft pick from the Lower Mainland, lead the Warriors with 16 points each. Kevin Jebson (a 20-year-old from Surrey) has started all but one of the Warriors (7-3) games in goal and sports a 3.00 goals against average and a .902 save percentage, but coach Darren Yopyk may elect to start Cam Gorchynski  (a 17-year-old from Chilliwack) against the Capitals.
