Greenfield Shuts out Chiefs

The West Kelowna Warriors got the Fred Page Cup Finals off on the right foot with a 2-0 win on Friday night over the Chilliwack Chiefs behind a 37-save shutout performance by Matthew Greenfield.

Kylar Hope scored halfway through the first period to open the scoring, but it was the Greenfield story early on as he kept the Warriors in it with 12 saves in the first ten minutes.

Hope’s goal was his eighth in the last five games, and fifth against the Chiefs in four games this post-season, as he finished off a pass from Liam Blackburn on a 2 on 1. While not credited with an assist, Brett Mennear did a great job on the side wall in his own zone to create the chance.

West Kelowna made some adjustments to start the second, and it created some more opportunities as the game wore on.

Captain Kyle Marino put the Warriors up 2-0 when he buried a rebound past Aidan Pelino after Bryan Basilico’s effort hit the post.

The Chiefs would have some chances in the third period, but first star Greenfield said no way, especially with a couple big saves with West Kelowna shorthanded and just over five minutes left in the final frame.

The final shots on goal were 37-25 Chilliwack in the game. Marino was named the third star.

Game 2 goes Saturday night at 7 PM in Chilliwack, as the Warriors look to take a 2-0 lead back home to Royal LePage Place on Monday and Tuesday.
