Thursday, September 30th, 2021

WEST KELOWNA B.C. – The West Kelowna Warriors Junior ‘A’ Hockey Club takes time to observe National Truth & Reconciliation Day, a day to recognize and commemorate the history and legacy of residential schools in Canada.

It’s an important day of education and awareness for our country“, stated Warriors President Chris Laurie. “WFN is a pillar of our community and we’re really pleased our team was able to participate in an indigenous ritual”.

The Warriors players took part in a smudging ceremony hosted by Tasha Swite; owner and operator of Spirit of the Lake Native Boutique in West Kelowna. Smudging connects people to the Creator and provides communities with a way to gain spiritual protection and blessings, as well as to improve spiritual health. The smoke created by burning sacred herbs is thought to purify the body and soul, and bring clarity to the mind. The Warriors took a group photo in front of Okanagan Lake standing on Sylix land which covers the majority of the Okanagan and West Kootenay region. For more information and resources on the history we encourage you to book a tour with Sncəwips Heritage Museum to learn more about Syilx history and culture.

The Warriors get back to work this Friday when they begin a two game set versus the Vernon Vipers. Puck drop at 7:00pm from Royal LePage Place in West Kelowna. General admission tickets are only $10. Fans can catch the action on  BCHLTV (formally HockeyTV) or on the free internet radio stream on Mixlr.
