Vernon, B.C. – Led by a three point afternoon from Carter Wilkie, The West Kelowna Warriors defeated the Vernon Vipers by a score of 5-1.

The West Kelowna Warriors hit the ice in Vernon Monday afternoon with some new look line combinations. Once the kinks got ironed out early, it was the Warriors taking control from there. In the final minute of the first period the line of Cameron Hicklin, Marcus, Joughin, and Ben Woodhouse cashed in. Tyson Jugnauth’s point shot spilled to the side of the net where Hicklin was able to take the bouncing puck and put it in off of a Viper’s defender.

The momentum from the late goal carried through the intermission and into the second period. The Warriors heavily outshot Vernon in the first ten minutes spending substantial time in the Viper’s zone. The relentless pressure led to a powerplay where another Jugnauth point shot was cleaned up, this time by Carter Wilkie. It then took Wilkie only 1:03 to tally his second of the game. A costly turnover in the Viper’s end landed on the stick of Porter Dawson who quickly found an unmanned Wilkie in the slot.

In the opening minutes of the third, a bouncing puck once again found its way in the back of the net courtesy of Hicklin. This time the puck deflected in directly off of Hicklin and past Viper’s netminder Roan Clarke. The Warriors then pushed the lead to five as Zach Brooks fired home his second in as many games. Johnny Derrick’s shutout bid for the Warriors would end with three minutes and change left in the game. Viper’s forward Luke Pakulak netted his first of the Pod season with an unassisted goal after finding a loose puck in the slot.  With three points this afternoon, Wilkie now sits tied for first on the team with nine points alongside Marcus Joughin.

The Warriors now have two days away from game play before they begin another set of four games in five days. The action starts Thursday April 15th, with the final 1:00pm start of the shortened Pod season. Tune into the action on BCHLTV (formally HockeyTV) or on the free internet radio stream on Mixlr.
