GAME RECAP: Bohn Helps Warriors To Overtime Victory

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SEPTEMBER 1st, 2018

TRAIL, B.C. – The West Kelowna Warriors concluded their preseason play on Saturday night as Lucas Bohn’s overtime winner gave them a 5-4 victory over the Trail Smoke Eaters at Cominco Arena.

The Warriors didn’t waste any time to get on the scoreboard as a penalty to the Smoke Eaters for a warmup violation saw West Kelowna get on the board first and came courtesy of a hot hand in Matt Kowalski. A turnover at the front of the Trail goal allowed Kowalski to pounce on the puck and beat goaltender Adam Marcoux over the blocker side for his 6th goal of the preseason and give the Warriors a 1-0 lead at the 1:55 mark on the man advantage.

Cole Wyatt put the Warriors ahead by a pair of goals at the 10:19 mark of the opening frame after Sam Anderson spotted him in tight from the slot. Wyatt received the pass on his forehand before going to his backhand and through the legs of Marcoux to double the West Kelowna lead to 2-0.

The Smoke Eaters used a power play of their own to work their way back into the game and cut the deficit to one goal at the 11:50 mark as Michael Hodge got the game within a goal. Hodge took a pass from Trevor Zins and roofed a shot up and over the blocker shoulder of netminder Connor Hopkins to cut the Warriors lead to 2-1.

Trail got the game even on at the 14:36 mark of the first period after Bryce Anderson delayed and outwaited a Warrior defender and find the trailing defenseman in the slot for a quality scoring chance. Diarmud Dimurro made no mistake with a shot over the glove side of Hopkins to tie the game at 2-2.

The Smoke Eaters took their first lead of the game late in the opening frame at the 18:04 mark to cap off a five-goal 1st period between the two sides. Kent Johnson raced down the left wing and shot from the bottom of the right-wing face-off circle, beating Hopkins on the blocker side for a 3-2 Smoke Eaters lead.

West Kelowna tied the game with the only goal of the second period on a 5-on-3 power play as Parm Dhaliwal walked the goal line with his first shot being stopped but was able to bury his own rebound at the 11:12 mark to get the game square heading into the 3rd period.

Jeremy Smith gave Trail their second lead of the game at the 9:50 mark of the final regulation period and came via another power play. Smith found daylight on the blocker side of Hopkins through traffic to give the Smoke Eaters a 4-3 lead.

It didn’t take long for the Warriors to get the game back on even terms with Brandon Dent driving the left wing and flipping a puck up and over the blocker shoulder of Marcoux to bring the game even at 4-4 at the 11:16 mark of the period and force overtime.

The 3-on-3 sequence found a winner early as just 51 seconds into the 4th frame, the Warriors were sprung on an odd-man rush with Kowalski feeding a pass to Lucas Bohn, who fired a shot past Marcoux and gave the Warriors the 5-4 overtime victory.

Season tickets are now on sale for the upcoming 2018/19 season, which is set to begin Friday, September 7th before heading to Royal LePage Place to host the Trail Smoke Eaters in their home opener on Saturday, September 8th. Head to the Warriors newly renovated office to check in on ticket details.
