Warriors Start Strong

Bentley University is getting some really good hockey players, and they proved it on opening night of the Western Canada Cup, combining for nine points as the West Kelowna Warriors opened up with a 3-0 win over the host Estevan Bruins.

Matthew Greenfield made 30 saves for his third shutout of the postseason, returning from missing Game 6 against the Chilliwack Chiefs, and looked like he didn’t miss a beat.

Reed Gunville got the opening goal in the middle of the second period as the Warriors fourth line cycled strong and Gunville pounced on a puck in the slot and buried it past Daniel Wapple.

Just 1:03 later, Brett Mennear snapped one home from Nick Rutigliano and Jonathan Desbiens, all Bentley commits.

The three would connect once again with the same scoring play, this time on a nifty deflection from the slot that fooled Wapple.

Another main storyline of the game was the special teams, as West Kelowna went 0 for 2 on the power play, while the Bruins were handed nine opportunities in the game. The Warriors penalty kill stood tall, as did Greenfield.

There will be no rest for the wicked as the Warriors will play on Sunday afternoon (2 PM local, 1 PM in BC) against the AJHL Champion Brooks Bandits, who were idle Saturday.
