NEWS: Warriors Acquire Defenseman Ewert In Three-Team Trade

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SEPTEMBER 5th, 2017

WEST KELOWNA, B.C. – The West Kelowna Warriors Junior ‘A’ Hockey Club has acquired defenseman Garrett Ewert (’99) from the Melfort Mustangs of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) as part of a three-way trade with the Penticton Vees and the Mustangs.

The Vees sent the rights to Ewert, along with the rights to defenseman James Miller, to the Mustangs in exchange for forward Dakota Boutin. Melfort then traded Ewert to the Warriors to complete the deal.

Ewert, 18, spent the 2016/17 season with the Kamloops Storm of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) and had to solid season from the blue line, scoring 10 goals while earning 42 points in 32 games played with the Storm including 68 penalty minutes. Ewert isn’t a stranger to BCHL play, getting into one game as an affiliate player with the Penticton Vees but did spent plenty of time with the club as an AP during the Western Canada Cup last season.

The Kamloops, BC native spent two seasons with the Thompson Blazers of the BC Major Midget League (BCMML), playing in a total of 77 games with 3 goals and 32 points to go along with 133 penalty minutes. The 6’1”, 165-pound defender will add some size and depth to an already solid Warriors back end.

“We acquired a defenseman that we feel can not only help us now but over the next few years as well” stated Warriors head coach and general manager Rylan Ferster.

West Kelowna opens their regular season up with home-and-home against the Trail Smoke Eaters beginning on Friday, September 8th at 7:00 PM at Cominco Arena. The game will be broadcasted live on the Warriors Internet Network and on pay-per-view at www.hockeytv.com. Pre-game festivities on the broadcast get underway at 6:45 PM with the voice of the Warriors, Trevor Miller.

The Warriors are proud to be hosting a First Responders Appreciation Night to be held at their home opener on Saturday, September 9th against the Trail Smoke Eaters. There will be a courtyard party outside of Royal LePage Place that kicks off at 4:00 PM with street hockey, beverage tents, music and much more. Fans are encouraged to buy their tickets early and can do so by visiting the Warriors office or by calling Office Administrator Kim Potter at (250) 769-7051.
